Celso Piña

  • Revolutionary Cumbia

"You know heavy metal? Well, we do heavy cumbia. Colombians play it more delicately. Not us, we go for it: trac-atrac, trac-atrac". The context is set. In spite of his moustachioed granddad appearance, the whimsical accordionist Celso Piña is not really the sort of bloke you’d ask to play at the old age pensioners’ tea dance. Aptly nicknamed "El Rebelde del Acordeón", this admirer of Che leads his own festive revolution by reinventing traditional Cumbia with the help of popular urban sounds, Norteña and Sonidera music and even ska, reggae and hip-hop. Cumbia and the accordion in the 2.0 age.
