Imam Baildi

  • Greece
  • Balkan bouzouki, flow and beats

Imam baildi is a succulent Mediterranean dish made from onions and aubergines. But it is also the project of the Falireas brothers, backed by six musicians including a rapper and a traditional singer, who bring up to date the rebetiko, a sort of Greek blues from the lowlands, born in Piraeus in the 1920s. The collective re-appropriate popular folklore and bouzouki music by blending them with electro beats, the flow of an MC and Balkan sounds that Bregovic would not disown. Giving the lie to the image of a Greece in the throes of political torment, their ultra-festive concerts have the effect of powerful anti-depressants.
