María Símoglou Ensemble

  • Greece
  • Vagabond rebetiko

Stories of sailors and jail birds, of tragic love affairs and hashish induced dreams, of scoundrel glances and exiles without hope of return ... the rebetiko - the polymorphous blues born in the low life cafes of the ports of Greece and Asia Minor - is haunted by them. María Símoglou pays tribute to Smyrna's culture with her classical voice and the timeless sounds of traditional instruments such as lafta, saz or zither. She revives this fascinating repertoire, halfway between sentimental song, social protest and oriental poetry. A world at once trivial, abounding, full of double meaning and seduction.
