Freshlyground were recently chosen by the South African Football Association to be its cultural ambassadors during the 2010 World Cup. It’s a measure of the degree to which the country identifies with this group and its mix of ethnic origins! And success has stretched far beyond the country’s frontiers, notably with the single “Doo Be Doo”. A repertoire of Afro-pop numbers sung in English or Xhosa by the charismatic Zolani Mahola, who is very much the band’s hallmark. A happy and refreshing music that never betrays its roots.
