Mahotella Queens

South Africa
Village du Monde

It was in the early sixties that Mbaquanga was born out of the imagination of Malhathini and the Mahotella Queens, a project whose goal was to bring to life the daily existence of South Africans through traditional sounds, mixed with rhythm and blues. A music with a strong identity and committed to supporting the black community, performed with infectious good humour and colourful dancing by the three “queens”, who soon became living legends of South African music. In spite of the death of Malhathini and a long absence from live performing, the vocal trio continue to perpetuate this unique musical style. On stage, the music takes on an additional dimension thanks to the choreography and traditional headdresses that have become their trademarks.
