Four exiles flee the violence of a jihadist group that has made music its enemy. Reunited in southern Mali, they’ve now joined forces to sublimate desert blues and recreate the atmosphere of the north, the outlines of a new home. Influenced by the Beatles and Jimmy Hendrix, the Songhoy Blues take up bouncy riffs and rock ecstasy with a purely Malian groove. At first deprived of music, they’ve now become its ambassadors. Their sophomore album is called Resistance. Superb.
